Driving Instructor Training

Why Become a Driving Instructor in Perth?

Driving instructors are consistently in demand across Western Australia. With WA's growing population and mandatory licensing requirements, qualified instructors — whether teaching car, motorcycle, or heavy vehicle — enjoy stable employment, flexible hours, and the genuine satisfaction of helping people gain independence on the road.

Miro Training Centre is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO No. 52070) and an Authorised Provider under the Motor Vehicle Driver Instructor Regulations 1964. That means the qualifications we issue are nationally recognised, legally required, and respected by the Department of Transport WA.

Which Instructor Course Is Right for You?

Miro Training Centre offers two instructor training pathways depending on the vehicle type you want to teach:

Both qualifications are nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and are required to apply for a Driver Instructor Licence with the Department of Transport WA.

What Does the Training Involve?

Both courses use a blended delivery model - you complete online theory at your own pace, then attend face-to-face sessions in Perth with Miro's experienced assessors. Our training staff have over 40 years' combined experience in the transport and driver education industry, with several having worked directly with the Department of Transport WA.

Miro goes beyond the minimum course requirements. You'll also learn the foundations of running a driving school business - including understanding how people learn, insurance considerations, dual control vehicle requirements, and how to access government programs like Keys2Drive.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in either instructor course, you will need to meet the following prerequisites:

  • Hold a current WA Motor Drivers Licence for the vehicle class you intend to teach
  • Have held that licence for a minimum of 3 continuous years
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be of good character and a fit and proper person, including being medically fit

What Happens After You Complete the Course?

Once you finish your course, you'll need to apply to the Department of Transport WA for your Driver Instructor Licence. You'll present your TLI41222 certificate, a current National Police Clearance Certificate, and your medical results. Miro Training Centre can guide you through this process as part of your training.

How long does it take to become a driving instructor in WA?

The TLI41222 car course involves approximately 2 weeks of face-to-face training plus online self-paced study beforehand. The heavy vehicle course involves 10 days face-to-face plus online modules. Total time from enrolment to completion varies, but most students complete within 2-3 months.
